Back in August 2014, Gretchen Greenlee stumbled upon the hashtag #facethefoliage on Instagram – a movement of artists on the ‘gram who use organic elements like flowers, leaves, and trees to create dynamic portraits. The hashtag was created by Justina Blakeney, a New York Times Best Selling author and designer.

As an artist and a lover of nature, Greenlee decided this was right up her alley and on August 9, she posted her first face. “The portrait combined dried lilies for hair, daisies for eyes, and pieces of grass for the eyebrow and mouth. Although it was simple, I had made it over the initial hump of trying out this whimsical marriage of plants and portraits.”

Now, Greenlee has posted over 20 #facethefoliage images on her Instagram account. She finds the process of creating the portraits to be therapeutic and challenges her creativity. “Evoking emotion through the placement of a petal just right for pouty lips, or the balance in an arch of an eyebrow to show happiness is my favorite part and I could spend an entire afternoon just trying to get the perfect expression across.”

Check out some of Gretchen Greenlee’s creations below, and if you’re craving more you can search the #facethefoliage on Instagram for thousands of flower portraits from all over the world.
